Predictions for Management Consultancy in 2013

I lead the Key Partnerships Division at People Source, which focuses on the recruitment of highly skilled consultants and executives. I work with businesses in a number of sectors including the Public Sector and Financial Services.

I think It’s interesting that the two most popular choices for career changes in 2012 were Management Consultancy and Investment Banking, this is reflected in the calibre of candidates we see coming to us looking to move in to consulting type roles.

The consulting industry in the UK is recovering well and should continue to do so throughout 2013. Companies are hiring but only the very best candidates are getting through. Anyone wishing to move in to Consultancy should first take a long hard look at their CV and make sure that it is tailored for the specific vacancy. Always add a cover note, highlight your strengths, what you’ll bring to the role/ company and really point out how they will benefit from hiring you.

If the vacancy is at a strategy house, then first study their website, but be aware that for permanent roles the case study preparation and interviews rounds can take six to nine months.

So, 2013… Firstly, I believe that the jobs market for consulting roles will gradually improve as we move through the year. This is because a third of all consulting vacancies are within Financial Services companies, who should themselves start to see improvements within sentiment and many of whom are planning to begin a number of large business change programmes and improvements projects.

With an improving economic climate we should see businesses progressing innovation plans and investment in skilled people to deliver them.

We expect hiring to become more role and skill specific rather than recruitment being challenged by time pressures.

Without a doubt companies will always have one eye on profitability and instead of recruiting for costly permanent people, companies will instead continue to hire consultants to fill vacancies within their companies.

Social Media have a bigger part to play. With businesses demanding very specific skills, recruiters will look to social sites like LinkedIn to locate the very best people. Ensure that your profile is up-to-date and optimised (see our Social Media guide).

If Social Media continues to be the way to deliver sudden demands for skilled people then it will become more and more important to ensure that you’re connected to the very best recruiters.
