People Source Volunteer Day at Penny Brohn UK

People Source Volunteer Day at Penny Brohn UK

Last week, eight of our staff kindly volunteered to swap office culture for horticulture in the Penny Brohn UK gardens.

Penny Brohn UK is a leading UK charity specialising in supporting people with cancer and the people around them. Their approach is designed to inspire people to play an active role in their wellbeing through a range of activities, courses and one to one support looking at the whole person, from body, mind and emotions through to practical issues, relationships and environment. They take the time to find what works best for an individual, help them discover what they need and allow them to live as well as they can.

It was an early start for our team, they were met by Harrison Leonard, the Trusts Manager, who told the team about what Penny Brohn does and then showed them the grounds. The day started out with the clearing of flower beds, lots of digging, wheelbarrow runs to the compost heap and some serious power washing.

Our green-fingered People Sourcer’s were then treated to a healthy lunch and split into two teams to continue their fine cultivation of the Penny Brohn UK gardens. Andrew, Mary and Ryan were tasked with clearing the meadow garden pathway, Tessa, Rob, Hana and Tom pruned hedges to keep the beautiful views unobscured while Luke cleaned the stonework leading from the building to the main garden.

With the hard work finished and the gardens looking immaculate, here is what the team had to say about their day:

“Working on site rather than donating money gave me the chance to really understand the incredible service that Penny Brohn UK provide. The level of care and attention to detail in everything they do reflects how passionate their staff are and it was great to be a part of that for a day…I hope we can go back to help again.” – Tessa Rowe, Senior Consultant.

"It was great to go and see where the money we're raising goes. The centre does some amazing work for cancer patients & their families, and it was great to be a part of that journey, even if just for the day!" – Mary Scudamore, Business Services Executive.

A massive well done to all our staff who contributed their time to a great charity.
